The National Scientific Center “Institute of Agriculture NAAS

The National Scientific Center “Institute of Agriculture NAAS” began its history in 1900 with the creation of an agrochemical laboratory of the Kyiv Society of Agriculture and Agricultural Industry, satisfying the existing needs of farmers, performing analyzes of soil and seed samples, contributing to raising the level of agricultural management. During the Stolypin agrarian reforms, for the first time in tsarist Russia, the laboratory carried out soil mapping in 22 districts. After the civil war, she surveyed the soil of the beet and cotton planting zone.

In 1928, the laboratory was transformed into the Ukrainian Research Institute of Agrochemistry and Soil Science, which in 1935 was renamed the Ukrainian Research Institute of Socialist Agriculture. His team developed a scientifically based classification of soils by particle size composition, determined the nature and properties of their colloidal part and water-physical properties.

The results of research in the late 1940s and early 1950s served as the basis for the design of the South Ukrainian and Krasnoznamyan main canals in the irrigation zone of the Kakhovska HPP and the development of a farming system on irrigated lands. In 1957-1961, the institute conducted a large-scale survey of the soils of Kyiv, Rivne, and Chernihiv regions, prepared soil maps for the farms of these regions (with characteristics of their properties and recommendations for improvement). The institute worked out the scientific foundations of highly productive agriculture, developed the theoretical foundations of creating crop rotations, optimizing the sowing wedge, the principles of organizing anti-erosion measures, the system of soil cultivation and its fertilization.

The most significant contribution of the institute’s scientists to the theory and practice of combating soil erosion is the development and implementation of a soil protection system of agriculture with a contour-reclamation organization of the territory. In 1991, this work was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology, and was placed by the Government of Ukraine as the basis of the concept of agricultural development. The staff of the institute developed the scientific bases for the reproduction and regulation of the fertility of light soils, the chemical melioration of acidic and saline soils, developed intensive technologies for the cultivation of grain ear and leguminous crops, the implementation of which made it possible to obtain the highest average annual gross grain harvest in the history of Ukraine in 1986-1990, and as well as technologies for the production of flax, forage cultivation, creation and use (for the first time in Ukraine) of irrigated cultural pastures, technologies for obtaining nitragin, azotobacterin and phosphorobacterin.

On the initiative of the institute, a factory-laboratory for the production of these drugs was created. In 1945, breeding work was started at the institute. During this time, 250 varieties and hybrids of various agricultural crops were created. Currently, breeding work is being conducted with 22 crops. There are 135 varieties and hybrids in the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine, with which 2.5 million hectares are sown every year. The results of breeding work with winter wheat and corn were awarded the State prizes of the USSR and Ukraine in the field of science and technology. Every year, the institute sells about 1,700 tons of elite seeds of grain crops and grasses to Ukrainian households.

NSC “Institute of Agriculture NAAS” is the main institution of the Scientific and Methodological Center “Agriculture”, since the beginning of the 50s it has been the Center for Scientific Support of Agro-Industrial Production of the Kyiv Region. More than 260 employees work here, including 17 doctors and 81 candidates of sciences. The system of the National Science Center includes the Kyiv and Panfyly research stations and the Chabany research farm.

In 2006, the institute was granted the status of “National Scientific Center”, by the decree of the Presidium of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences and the order of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences, the Institute of Agriculture of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences was renamed the National Scientific Center “Institute of Agriculture of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences”.

Only in the post-war years, more than 800 candidates and doctors of science were trained. More than a thousand scientific and technical developments have been completed during the institution’s existence. Employees have prepared for printing more than 200 books and monographs, obtained 250 copyrights for varieties and hybrids of plants, 82 certificates of state registration of varieties and, respectively, 8 and 113 patents for varieties and inventions.

In 1978, the institute was awarded the Order of the Labor Red Banner, in 2002 – the Certificate of Honor of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
